I’m a PR student…so what?
I came across Dave’s Fleet’s blog post, “Be Wrong,” this morning and had to talk about it. It was refreshing. His point? When it comes to blogging about social media, not everything he says is on the mark. Much of it may even be straight-up wrong. But…
That’s ok!
Fleet gives three reasons why it’s a good thing to be wrong once-in-a-while.
- Admitting you’re wrong is, in its own way, a powerful way to connect with people. It brings you down from your pedestal.
- You can learn from the comments you’ll receive from your readers.
- No-one is perfect. If you’re never wrong, it likely means you’re not breaking out into new territory. That gets boring pretty quickly. Few people really want to be boring.
I sometimes feel that as a public relations student I have no credibility or am in little position to blog about an industry I am just beginning to understand. Fleet’s blog post made me feel better; by throwing ideas and thoughts out on my blog I’m learning. I’m reading more established practitioners’ blogs and gaining new insights and ideas and relating them to my own experiences and knowledge to the best of my ability.
So yes, I think it is okay to be wrong. I also think it is okay that I’m a PR student with a PR blog. Because one day I am going to look back and see where I started, and be proud that I put myself out into the social space this early in my career.

I am so glad you blogged about this. I often find myself in a similar mindset: who am I, a college student, to write about public relations? I think this is such an important way to learn about public relations and also one of the most frightening (even commenting on other blogs is a little scary!). It is refreshing to hear even professionals make mistakes and also encouraging to learn that those who do correct misinformation can become a crucial connection, and from a public relations perspective it is all about the connections right?
